Right after Christmas, I stayed with my parents for nearly a week and was the only child in the house. We had so much fun! My dad is one of my favorite people and has been making me laugh for as long as I can remember. I forced talked him into watching Mamma Mia and live-tweeted his responses. They were so hilarious, they deserve their own blog post. Enjoy.
“She’s going to start singing right from the beginning? OH GOSH.”
“So this is Les Miserables? And they ALL SING?”
“THAT’S what the movie is about?” “Dad, I already explained it to you.” “Yeah, but what’s the point in singing it?”
“How long is this movie?” (We’re exactly eight minutes in.)
“I bet he sings too.” “He does.” “I can’t wait.”
“And they ALL have to sing?”
“This movie would be OK if it didn’t have singing in it.”
“Dad! You can’t leave!” “I just need to take a little break.”
“Great. An ABBA song. My favorite band.”
One from my mom: “I like how they made a musical and none of them can sing.”
“I just thought of something. Where does the music come from?”
“At least it’s not opera.”
“Is he gonna sing now?…..Yep.”
“Slipping Through My Fingers” just came on and he threw his hands down on the arm rests of his chair and LOOKED at me. This is so hilarious.
Another from my mom: “Oh gosh. They sure don’t talk for very long before they start singing again.”
“GET ON WITH THE WEDDING ALREADY!”
“Is this the sequel to Les Miserables?”
“He’s gonna sing. She’s gonna sing. (covering his face with his hands) EVERYBODY’S SINGING.”
“It’s okay, Dad, it’s almost over.” “Yeah, NINE HOURS LATER. It’s like next week already!”
My dad’s new favorite saying, in regards to anything he doesn’t want to do: “I would rather watch Mamma Mia.”
The Torture of Dad continues: Mom & I made him walk all over IKEA with us. Twice. (You know, in case we missed anything the first time.)
Dad: “You know what would be the ultimate? Walking around IKEA with a portable DVD player that’s playing Mamma Mia.”

I love that musical, but I don’t blame your dad after hearing Pierce Brosnan sing :)
Lauren from Texas says:
It’s true. I first saw it in theaters with my sisters and didn’t think he was so bad…but after hearing him again with my dad under harsh scrutiny, I think he has a point. ;)
Kim says:
Haha! Thanks for the laugh. I would have found your father way more entertaining than any movie.
Lauren from Texas says:
Kim, I did too! I’ll never see Mamma Mia quite the same way again. ;)
Mary Craig says:
The next best thing would be to get your dad and Ken to watch it together. We’d have to tweet rapid fire. We’d probably need to bring in extras.
Lauren from Texas says:
Oh goodness…can you imagine? We’d need a Tweeting Army. Also, I don’t think I’ll be able to talk my dad into any more musicals for awhile. This one did him in.
Jennifer Bohrer says:
Mamma Mia was my 80 year old farmer Uncle’s all time favorite. really. He and my cousin saw the stage version several times and he LOVED the movie too…. go figure. I watched the movie with my Dad (after hearing Uncle Dwayne’s review) and we weren’t as impressed.
Lauren from Texas says:
That is so funny! Uncle Dwayne sounds pretty awesome…although I understand you and your dad’s feelings, too. ;-)
Sarah says:
Your dad sounds like so much fun! The whole movie? I was distracted by being obsessed with Amanda Seyfried’s necklace.
Lauren from Texas says:
I can’t even remember what it looked like! Off to google now… :)
Julie Henshaw says:
Did I ever tell you about the time my roommate and I (pre-marriage to Ryan of course) saw a flyer about a Mama Mia sing-along in the park event here in Chi-town so we went? And when we got there we soon discovered that it was a gay pride event. NEVER have I seen so many people having so much fun at a sing-along. It was a BLAST. I need more friends who are not afraid to sing and dance to a musical movie in public.
I miss your parents. They are good people. And your Mom’s axe murderer impression and your Dad’s GUMBO mmmmm.
P.S. I hope you carry on the tradition of the axe murderer to your children, even if you don’t live in the middle of nowhere ;)
Lauren from Texas says:
That sounds SO AWESOME. Maybe something like that will be going on next time I visit. Sounds like a blast!!
And of course I will carry on the tradition of axe murderer…send your kids to Crazy Aunt Lauren for the summer and she will teach them the ways of the woods too. ;-)
My parents miss you too! Oh how I wish we could sit at their dining room table and eat a big bowl of gumbo right now.
Kim says:
My dad has a very loud laugh that he’s not afraid to use at movies…you can ask John C. sometime about seeing Ernest movies with him. There are certain movies I will never be able to watch or even hear about without hearing my dad laugh at them.
Lauren from Texas says:
You’ve gotta love someone who is not afraid to laugh loudly!
Abigail says:
Bahahaha. I saw Mama Mia live and loved it. The movie though? Yeah, I can’t blame your dad…. sorry.
Lauren from Texas says:
Abigail, after seeing it again, I think I’m with you (& my dad). Pierce Brosnan is handsome and everything, but a singer he is NOT.
