// a small sneak peek of the new house
I’m still playing catch-up from all the packing + moving + unpacking, so a meme it is!
Current Book(s) >> Is it sad that I have yet to finish the two books I needed to finish last time I did a “Currently” post? Yes, yes it is. I quit reading for a while because things got absolutely crazy. The two unfinished books on my Kindle are Two for the Dough, the second book in the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich, and MWF Seeking BFF by Rachel Bertsche. MWF got kind of slow, so I’m not sure I’ll be able to pick it back up, even though I hate not finishing books. Two for the Dough is good; I have been reading that before bed each night. I’m sure I’ll eventually make my way through the entire Stephanie Plum series. They’re funny and fun/easy to read, and a little creepy. I like that combination.

Current Playlist >> John Mayer’s new album, Born & Raised. Oh John Mayer, how do you keep coming out with these albums that are different and yet the same? It’s not my favorite John Mayer album by any means, and I do think it’s slightly half-hearted at times, but it’s still John Mayer, so I love it.
Current Shame-Inducing Guilty Pleasure >> My BIL bought my mom a huge bag of peanut M&M’s and they left them at my house when they helped us move. They’ve been getting me through these trying times, let me tell you.
Current Color >> My kitchen cabinets are green (a story for another post), and all my kitchen stuff is red, so figuring out how to make that not look like Christmas has been a fun challenge.
Current Drink >> Gatorade A.M. Orange-Strawberry. Look, I know Gatorade is for ATHLETES and PEOPLE WHO SWEAT (also people who are sick or hungover, but whatevs), but look, it’s delicious. Especially this flavor. Plus, I’ll need all these extra electrolytes when I start working out! All the time! Because it’s totally going to happen! Next week.
Current Food >> Anything I don’t have to cook. Cooking is not high on my priority list right now. We had Chinese take-out a couple of nights ago, and I didn’t think it was possible to find a city’s best Chinese food on the first try, but I think we did, because I would have proposed to that Sesame Chicken and fried rice if I hadn’t inhaled it before I had the chance.
Current Favorite Show >> Veronica Mars. I quickly went through all three seasons when they were on Netflix about a year ago and then promptly wished Kristen Bell had made about 17 more seasons. The show is so awesome. She’s like, a modern-day Nancy Drew with a serious attitude problem. I want to be her BFF and braid her hair help her solve mysteries. Also, THAT LOGAN ECHOLLS. There is something about his mix of nerd + jerk + badass that speaks to the rebellious 15-year-old side of me (it’s a very small side, btw). I have a crush on him. And Veronica. And the whole show. Luckily SOAPnet (I KNOW I KNOW) plays reruns all the time so I set my DVR to record all of them and have weekly VMars marathons. The only awkward part is having to explain why your TV is always on the SOAPnet channel. To your husband. Who is looking at you judgingly.
Current Wishlist >> I have an ongoing list of things I want/need for the new house, but spending money is not my friend right now (moving is expensive!). But I guess since it’s a wishlist, I can go ahead and say I’d love some rugs for the hardwood floors, a mason jar soap dispenser for the kitchen (I guess I can make one of these cheaply? Does anyone know anything about this?), new towels, a new comforter for our bed, a headboard (currently on the lookout for DIY ideas), a shower curtain for the guest bathroom…I’ll go ahead and stop now.
Current Needs >> To officially finish unpacking and clean this house from top to bottom. It was cleaned before we moved in but I never really feel like a home is mine until I clean it myself. Ya know?
Current Triumphs >> We moved and I survived. We packed, moved, and (almost) unpacked in 11 days. We had phenomenal help and support from family and friends, for which I am so thankful. It was hard work but we pushed through and it was worth it. The only room with unpacked boxes is the guest room/my office. I can live with that.
Current Bane(s) of my Existence >> Cardboard boxes. Make it stop.
Current Celebrity Crush >> I just watched New Years Eve the other day and that dance between Zac Efron and Michelle Pfeiffer at the end? I could not decide who was cuter! I mean, obviously I settled on Zac but Michelle was pretty adorable too.
Current Indulgence >> Catching up on my sleep. After the last two weeks I’ve had, my body was all “I’m giving up unless you let me sleep” and I’m all “deal.” I’ve slept in the last couple of mornings. It feels nice.
Current #1 Blessing >> Wonderful people in my life. Great clients, amazing family, friends from Texas who have been texting to check on me, and, from what I can tell, some super friendly neighbors.
Current Slang or Saying >> “What are you wearing, ‘Jake from State Farm’?!” My dad and I always text each other when we see this commercial. It never fails to make me laugh. “She sounds hideous!”
Current Outfit >> Lately, my criteria has been simple: whatever is easy to find amidst the rubble, won’t make me melt in this Louisiana heat, and clean. Okay, whatever is cleanish.
Current Excitement >> I have my first Louisiana friend date tomorrow at a cute coffee + dessert place here in town. I met this great girl via the Internet, which I’ve learned is an excellent way to meet friends and not creepy at all, MOM STOP EMAILING ME ABOUT INTERNET MURDERERS. Anyway, I’m meeting her tomorrow afternoon. I’m excited to make new friends and find new places to go + eat. I’ve been here a week today and I’m ready to get this show on the road!
Current Mood >> Getting stuff done. Is that a mood?
One last thing, today is Leia’s FOURTH birthday! I love this beautiful girl. One day I hope to get her a flock of Pygmy goats, but until then, herding us and Pancho around the house will have to do. Happy birthday you crazy-eyed dog!

Erin @ The Speckled Palate says:
First of all, HOORAY for y’all finally settling in to your new Louisiana home! Secondly, we need a friend date sometime soon. Thirdly (… I don’t think that’s a word), I have all the Stephanie Plum books and LOVE THEM. So if you need some of them, let me know, and I’m happy to let you borrow them because they are pretty fabulous.
Happy birthday, sweet puppy!
Rhona says:
Ahhhh your dog is soo adorable!! What kind of dog is she? She looks like a little Australian sheepdog or cattledog or something?
CookinwVictoria says:
Everything sounds great! HAPPY 4TH BIRTHDAY LEIA!!!
Here are some instructions on how to make the mason soap jar :) Everything will come along. :) http://theblissfullycontentlife.blogspot.com/2010/08/homemade-christmas-canning-jar-soap.html
Heahther says:
Sorry I haven’t commented in so long! Your new house looks so adorable and congrats on your move!!!
Katie says:
I love Memes. And peanut M&M’s. That sounds really good right now.
Anywho, I’m so glad you guys are starting to get all settled in to your new home! And yay for internet friends! Hope you have an awesome time on your friend date :)
Chrissy (The New Me) says:
Sounds like your already thriving in your new city, despite the green kitchen cabinets. :)
Jess says:
The first thing I saw were those green cabinets…from the picture I think they look cute, but maybe they are hideous in real life. :)
Becca says:
Sounds like good things are going on in Louisiana! I made my own headboard and it’s super easy and looks so expensive…but cost me about $100 total. I got some really nice (and sorta pricey) fabric. Bought a sheet of plywood, some foam batting, and a staple gun. I think you see where I’m going with this. I had to have someone help me because you want to pull the corners really really tight. I’d say the hardest part was picking fabric I liked. I wanted something fun and vibrant but neutral enough that I could change bedding and it wouldn’t be a problem. Solved that dilemma but choosing a neutral off-white in a textured fabric. It might sound weird but it was an easy and cheap project that 100% improved my bedroom. Good luck!

Love the pic of your new digs! As far as the red and green kitchen trying not to make it look like x-mas; perhaps you can do a retro strawberry theme. I feel like I’ve seen green and red with retro strawberry themes. Just a thought.
Natalie {Miss Social} says:
This is such a good idea, I’m going to style this for my blog today! :)
I’ve always wanted to check out Veronica Mars, love Kristen Bell! And, Born & Raised, it definitely my soundtrack currently as well. So good, although I you’re right, it is a little lack luster compared to his usual records.
Abigail says:
Sounds like Louisiana is treating you well so far, really glad to hear it.
And now I neeeeed Chinese food for dinner. Thanks.
Julia says:
Your green kitchen is darling! Add some orange and yellow- not lemon yellow, more gold- and it will not be Christmasy AT ALL. Green might be the new black. Also, check Craig’s List for new stuff. It is one of the wonders of the modern world (also Target, Ikea, and Trader Joe’s).
Alicia says:
I agree with the Veronica Mars obsession. I also watched the whole thing on Netflix and then got excited when it came to soap net. So I have been watching it all over again. Logan Echolls! Hope you get the last of the boxes unpacked and out of your life soon. The boxes when moving always seem like they are multiplying in numbers before you can finish unpacking.
kate @ undeniable style says:
I LOVE that Zac Efron dance scene, it makes me SO. HAPPY. Actually, I love a lot of things about this post…john mayer, gatorade, girl dates, and jake from state farm :)
