TEXstyle: sock it to me

TEXstyle: sock it to me

I, along with what I imagine to be most of the female population, adore Sarah Jessica Parker, especially as Carrie Bradshaw. The hair, the clothes (as ridiculous as they may be), the bags, the jewelry, and the shoes. OH, THE SHOES. And honestly, I think she has the greatest hair. I’m a little embarrased to be admitting this, but part of the reason I switched my degree to English and Creative Writing was because I wanted to be a columnist in NYC (although I probably would have chosen a different topic). I know, I’m a genius. I hope my parents aren’t reading this, because if they are, they are probably ripping their clothes and mourning the thousands of dollars they spent on my education. IT’S OKAY GUYS. I’M IN GRAD SCHOOL NOW.

(Wow. Tangent much?)

One of my favorite hair styles à la SJP is her high, super-huge bun. I have been trying to perfect this bun for some time now, but it doesn’t work very well if you’re bald you have very fine hair. Then I saw Mandy’s post linking to this amazing tutorial. A full, decadent bun in seconds? Created with something out of your laundry hamper? I had to try it.

Well, it took a little longer than seconds, because of the bald thing the fine hair thing. But the result was a cute, round bun that made my sloppy “I’m going to the laundromat because my dog puked on my comforter and it won’t fit in my washing machine” look seem a little more put together. (I feel that I should say I also met with my advisor and later went to class; I wouldn’t have put on makeup just to go to the laundromat. Okay, I wouldn’t have put on as MUCH makeup. Leave me alone.)

I’ll definitely be trying this again, next time with a bigger sock. Fatter sock? I DON’T KNOW. I stuck some bobby pins in it too, to try to make it gravitate more to the top of my head, but next time I’ll probably just put my ponytail higher. If you haven’t watched the video, none of this is making sense. So watch the video. Have some coffee. And try a sock bun.

Happy Monday! I wasn’t kidding about the coffee.

  1. From Julie:

I cannot tell you how many times I have tried to do a sock bun with my hair. I have at least three different socks that I sacrificed for the cause and it has just never worked for me :(
Hence why I keep my hair short. When it is long there is nothing I can do to it or for it that doesn’t take seriously 2 hours and when it is short I just have to blow dry.
Your curse is fine hair, mine is thick hair. There just can’t be a happy medium.

  2. From gingermandy:

GENIUS! I rarely wear my hair up but I am fond of big buns (LOL) so I’m definitely going to try it since my hair is finally long enough to give it some volume.

  3. From Suburban Sweetheart:

Just watched her video & am feeling kind of dumb, because I don’t necessarily understand what you do when putting the sock on to make this happen. But I’m gonna try it anyway, because it looks great on both of you!

  4. From Tabaitha:

Thanks for sharing the link. I can’t wait to try it.

  5. From Liz:

I agree with Suburban Sweetheart ^^ I don’t get it lol. Did her sock have a hole in it??

  6. From Kaci Johanna:

Looks great! I LOVE SJP, too… especially as Carrie. :)

  7. From Nora:

I love it! Looks great on you. And yes, I’m a huge SJP fan a la the Bradshaw days. I wish I could get away with wearing colored bras under shirts and hair like hers. I’ll have to try the bun one of these days :)

  8. From Clara from Portugal:

Wow, thanks. Loved the tutorial; I’m now sporting a massive sock bun every couple of days and it does look incredibly put together.
