Friday I made the announcement that I would not longer be working at the hotel. Now I’d like to tell you a little bit about what I will be doing.
When I was told that my job at the hotel couldn’t be part-time as I had originally understood, I began job hunting. In a college town, that’s tough. Everyone wants to pay you very little, since they have their pick of desperate college students. And while I may be a college student, I can’t afford to be desperate. I have a mortgage and a husband who is also in grad school. So I started emailing media and internet marketing companies in the surrounding areas, praying that my 4 years of experience and my passion for social media would stand out to someone.
I got an email back and began correspondence with a media company not too far from where I live. There wasn’t a job listing, but my email intrigued the owner, and he created a job description for me that looks something like this:
- Attending networking events/sales for the company.
- Working with clients on their social media strategies; offering social media management services to clients.
- BLOGGING – for clients and for the company (I added the ALL CAPS).
To get myself really psyched up, I recently attended SchipulCon. I learned so much and was reenergized to start this new endeavor. Basically, I cannot say enough good things about Schipul and the people who work there, specifically David and Katie. (You can read my SchipulCon ’09 post here.) Plus, I got to hang out with Chelsea all day Friday during the conference…I mean, when you get to sit with your best blog friend in the presence of the guy who developed WordPress, I’d call that a pretty fantastic day.
Already my life has improved dramatically. While I miss the hotel and it still feels a little weird to not get up and go in every day, I am loving all the free time I have to be a student. I’m getting more rest (hallelujah), taking care of things around the house, and getting my homework done at a time other than 2am. When I’m working, I’m writing, blogging, and experimenting with social media. Life is good, my friends. Good and nerdy, just the way I like it.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a mid-term to study for and another pot of coffee to brew.
