Christmas Baking 101

Since I was such a Scrooge last year, I was bound & determined to do a few Christmasy things this season. Baking is one of my favorite things in the world, so I decided to make little gift boxes for Michael’s professors & our neighbors. It was a lot of fun (albeit a lot of work) & everyone appreciated the goodies.

The recipes I used were simple & tasty, which means I need to blog them, right? The first things I made were Picky Palate’s Brownie Covered Oreos. I heard about them through Chelsea, & they were awesome. I used Oreos with red icing (Holiday Oreos?), as well as mint Oreos (green icing). Adorable, festive, & delicious.

The other two recipes came from Twitter friends, and are as follows:

The Clear-the-Cupboard cookies were so yum (& were the cookies referenced in this post). The Tagalong-Alikes (which is a name I came up with when, after making them, my friend Melanie said “They taste like Girl Scout Tagalongs!”) are SO. FREAKING. EASY. but look fancy & are amazingly delightful.

What are your favorite holiday cookie/goodie recipes?

Oh my goodness, those Tagalongs look AMAZING. I may just have to make some for Christmas!

I always get asked to make Peppermint Bark – it’s so easy, but my brother in law wont let me come over for Christmas unless I bring some. :)

YUM! Great job! I don’t know what my favorite desert to make is, I’m not much of a baker but my favorite Christmas treat is pecan pie. I also love the chex mix, dipped in chocolate & peanut butter, covered in powdered sugar snack that my Auntie Carol used to make us! It’s the best.

I wanted to use the red holiday Oreos for mine but couldn’t find them. So I did one bath of fudge oreos and one batch of mint. Then I drizzeled melted white chocolate over the top. The mint ones were FANTASTIC.

Yay for not being a scrooge this year!! I’m totally a scrooge. I will not be doing any Christmas baking and I have not even put up a single decoration in my apartment. (They take time, space, and money; three things you never have when you live in the city!)

In fact I will be by myself on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day! My family is not celebrating until the week after Christmas. I’ll most likely buy some eggnog and watch Home Alone and that will be as close to Christmas as I get until I see family the week after. :)

Your Christmas boxes look great! Glad the neighbors and profs appreciated them!!!

Those recipe cards are too cute!!!
And please believe I will be making those tag along alikes. I hate baking…and that doesn’t seem like baking to me.

Those boxes of yours are pure sugary love. #want!

I was going to make pumpkin or apple jam but eventually found the recipe for home made capuccino. So much simpler, a little bit more expensive but oh so good. Sharing!
(trying to do my best with the metric system… please check if the portions are correct)

10 oz (300 grams) powdered milk
1 small bag of whip cream powder
    2 tsp of baking soda
    3 tsp of powedered cocoa
5 oz (150 grams) of coffee (soluble)
2 oz (50 grams) of sugar

    Mix mix mix. There.

WHAT? I want all of these. I helped a friend & her brother make Christmas cookies this morning & didn’t bring any home with me, which was perfect – the joy of baking & snacking while I baked, but nothing left to me to eat in the end.

I love the festive oreo mix! Now I want cookies …

Ooh, those cookies look so yummy!

My mom gets me to make shortbread cookies every Christmas, and butter tarts… and I am also roped into making my homemade cranberry sauce.

They’re not even going to miss out on all of that, because I’m in Korea. My mother has assured me that she’s throwing Christmas part 2 when I return, and that all of my usual baking will be required. How kind…

I just realized something. We’re not exactly Twitter friends missy. First we became email buddies. THEN Facebook. Then we had an awkward brunch that turned fun when everyone else left and THEN we became Tweeps. We have a bit of a quirky history. :-)

I made the tagalongs tonight with whole wheat ritz and reduced fat peanut butter and they were delicious… I’m pretty sure the combination doesn’t help on calories when I eat half the batch … :)

On a sidenote – they are an awesome make-with-kids recipe too :)

I just wanted to let you know that you inspired me to take on the task of attempting some Christmas goodies. I created a post of my attempt with Brownie Covered Oreos and I included a link to your blog so people would know where this wonderful idea came from!

    Dear Lauren,

I hope to one day hear a knock at my door and open it to find a plate of tagalong-alikes.

    Thanks.
