I’ve been a blonde my whole life. Born a towhead, I’ve had variations of natural & not-so-natural blonde for the last 24 years.
The first time I messed with the blonde was when I was maybe 15. A friend & I decided to dye our hair without telling our parents. I chose the color “Peruvian Fire.” Because a natural dark-blonde should take such a huge leap into her own hands at that ripe age, right? It was a semi-permanent that took forever to fade, my mom almost had a heart attack, & the rest is history.
I left the blonde alone after that, playing around only with peroxide & a blow drier (yikes) or semi-permanent blonde washes. Then, at 18, I decided to give the red a chance again. DON’T ASK ME WHY. I turned into the Little Mermaid, covered it with brown, & eventually faded back to blonde. Always back to blonde.
Then I started The Box Dye Years. Throughout college, my friend Shelly & I dyed our hair at least once a month, about every color of the rainbow between the two of us. I always stayed in the blonde family, except once when I turned my hair purplish ashy blue & had to cover with brown (I clearly knew NOTHING about what I was doing). My signature shade was “Champagne Fizz” by Garnier; it would turn my hair sort of a strawberry blonde that was decent enough, I suppose.
When I was 20, I decided to get my hair done by a friend of my mom’s who did hair out of her home but had all the equipment to do a professional job. She gave me awesome highlights/lowlights & that was the end of it. I was hooked, vowing never to DIY again. She did my hair until I got married. Then I started going to Michael’s friend’s wife who owns her own salon, & continued to go to her until we moved this summer. Always staying blonde.
This summer, I bleached the crap out of my hair (see the story here). I totally went back on my DIY vow, & I’m glad I did. It’s been fun, but to tell the truth I’m tired. When I got my hair professionally done, I could go three months, sometimes four, before cuts/colors. At-home color just doesn’t last as long (mine doesn’t anyway), not to mention the ROOTS that come along with being so blonde.
So last week, I bit the bullet & made an appointment with a reasonably priced local salon. My appointment is today at 1pm. I couldn’t be more excited. First, that I’m not doing it myself, & second because I’ve decided to KBG – Kiss Blonde Goodbye. I’ve never paid someone to do anything but blonde, & I really want to see if I’ll like it. Wish me luck.
My goal is to get to this by winter:
But to save myself an episode of Peruvian Fire – The Adult Version, I’ve decided to take smaller steps to get there. Please keep in mind that my hair currently looks like this (give or take 4+ weeks of roots):

So this will be the picture I take in for my color muse:
I also need a cut (since I haven’t had one since the beginning of the summer), & I’m thinking something like this might work:
Thoughts? Feelings? Comments? Concerns? Honestly, I’d be a lot more concerned if I were taking such a huge leap into my own hands, but I think I’m safe since this will be a professional job. While I’ve pretty much decided on this color + cut, I’m still open to suggestions.
At least until today at 1pm.

Very cool! Can’t wait to see. I’m so guilty of at home DIY on hair. And oh the messes I’ve made…

Since I started reading your blog, you’ve always been a blondie, but I think the brown would look awesome. Plus you’ve chosen a beautiful shade of brown. Can’t wait to see how it turns out!

I think the cut and color will look great on you. I’ve only ventured into blonde a time or two. I am darker complected so it doesn’t look all that great on me. I have however, had a spectrum of shades from light brown, red, purple, and black to just about everything in between. I am generally a DIYer. Can’t wait to see the end result.
Katie says:
I love the color you chose and the haircut. I’m sure it is going to turn out very cute.

I think that will look good! I’m not sure what area of Texas you’re in, but if you’re near the Austin/San Marcos area, I know some great stylists.
Kara says:
I’m excited to see it! I have no doubt that it will look fabulous. And brunettes are actually the ones who have more fun, lol. (Couldn’t help but add a horribly cheesy cliche in there!)
Nora says:
Love it! I think it would be great on you. I can’t wait to see the change =)
Also, I agree; box and/or DIY hair color doesn’t last as long as when I get it done at the salon. Maybe I’m doing it wrong!?
Emily says:
You go, girl! I have ventured over to the “dark side” a time or two but have always returned back to blonde. I too was born a toe head and blonde just feels like “me.” Can’t wait to see how it turns out!

I think you’re going to look amazing as a brunette. Srsly. It’s good that you’re going to do it in phases since you are really blonde right now. You best MMS me when you get out of there!
Stephany says:
I actually did the opposite when I went from brown to blonde this summer. And since my hair was pretty dark brown when I changed it, I wasn’t certain my stylist could get it to the shade of blonde I liked. But she’s pretty much amazing and DID and I love it! I never imagined I’d love being a blonde so much, but it suits me for now.
Can’t wait to see the new hair!
Heather says:
There is no way you won’t look stunning…
I can’t wait to see the results.
I do the same thing… always back to blond. But I LOVE it when my hair is dark.
You’re going to look amazing!

I am so excited to see what you come up with! I’m planning to do something really, really drastic in January once I’m not pregnant anymore, but I have no idea what.
Victoria says:
Post pics ASAP with the new hair color!!!! :)
Mary Ellen says:
I love your blond hair, but I totally understand your need to go darker. I loved being blond, but the bleach and constant touching up the roots just fried my hair. I am now much darker again, with some subtle blond highlights. Much easier to maintain. You are so beautiful as a platnium blond though! I loved it! Good luck and can’t wait to see pics!
Kathleen says:
I think you’re going to look great with dark hair. I can picture it. I know you’re a natural blonde, but I think dark will suit you perfectly too. Maybe it’s just because you’re gorgeous. :)
Katherine says:
How about post a picture of your new hair RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!
Kyla Roma says:
You are so alarmingly gorgeous!! I love your new hair, and I definitely get how scary big changes can be – you will rock this :)

I think you rock the brunette! :)

HI! I came to your blog after reading your hilarious comment on Harper’s Happenings. Great blog!!
Karen says:
I’ve already seen your picture now that you’re a brunette and you look great.
I’d love to try being a brunette sometime but I’m a little scared being that I am so pale and my eyebrows are such a light color (and barely existent at all).
