Mice tears (like crocodile tears, but more sincere).

I’m a crier. Some of you know this about me. There are a wide variety of things that can make me emotional: the iPhone 4 FaceTime commercial, a sweet email from a friend at the right moment, that certain time of month (in which EVERYTHING makes me cry), someone saying “how are you doing?” when I’m feeling particularly emotional & knowing they really want to know… the list goes on. Michael is convinced that half the time, I’m just really worked up & start fake crying to get myself out of whatever situation I’m in, but that’s simply not true. I’m a sensitive soul. With crazy raging hormones.

A certain number of movies also make the list, many of which are, ashamedly, Disney movies.

Bambi? Don’t even get me started. I watched it once & can’t even think about watching it again.

Old Yeller? No. Just no. I can never watch that movie again.

The Fox & the Hound? WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO DO TO ME?

Are you noticing a pattern? I’m a little bit of an animal lover. Other movies I can’t make it through: Milo & Otis (I’m tearing up already), Marley & Me (snot running down my face in the theater, y’all), & Homeward Bound. A steady flow of tears on my part.

But the one movie that can make me cry just thinking about it? Robin Hood, the Disney version.

.

There’s something about those poor little animals having everything taken away that makes me bawl my eyes out. The worst part? The birthday scene when the little rabbit gets his coin taken away. Or, OH MY GOSH, when the mice family has to split ONE CRUMB between like, 5 of them.

So when Michael rented Robin Hood, the Russell Crowe version, & asked me if I wanted to watch it, I politely declined.

Me: “The only version I like is the Disney version. Okay, actually, I don’t even like that one, because it makes me cry. Like, when the rabbit gets his gold birthday coin taken away. Or when (sniffle) the (sniffle) mice family (tearing up) has to share ONE CRUMB.”
Michael: “Are you CRYING?”
Me: “IT’S SAD OKAY?!”
Michael: “This is proof that you can fake cry. You can make yourself cry at the drop of a hat.”
Me: “I’m really crying! The mice family makes me sad! You’re mean!” (storms out of room)

(End scene, dim lights)

I need to know I’m not alone here. What kinds of things make you cry? What movies bring on the waterworks for you? All comments from fellow weepers will be presented to the husband with a healthy dose of “SEE! I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE!”

Unless I really am the only one. And in that case, I might just cry.

Comments on Mice tears (like crocodile tears, but more sincere).

  1. From jackie:

oh jeez, if were talking just disney movies here, dumbo, when the mama elephant is taken by the circus and shes like singing or whatever with dumbo and they hug eachothers trunks through the cage bars….. oh my god. so freakin sad.

  2. From saucyredhead:

The iPhone Facetime commercial? Totally gets me EVERY time! The other thing that can make me cry? Finishing a really good book. I feel like I’m losing friends! If that doesn’t convince Michael you’re normal I don’t know what will!

  3. From Kristina A.:

I cry for everything too!!! last night I was watching the Biggest Loser bawling my eyes out! I had to catch my breathe!! Oh and the Face-Time Commercial made me cry histerically, mind you I was at work when I watched and I had to walk out the bathroom!

You are NOT the only one! I’m right there with you :)

  4. From rachieannie:

Dumbo. Oh my gosh when she is rocking her little baby through the bars of her cage? Can’t do it. I also cried during Pocahontas. I thought she should end up with the Indian warrior and was so sad when he got killed!

Also, never ever NEVER see Black Beauty. NEVER! My mom and I went to it in the theater (I was around 10 or so) and bawled and bawled and bawled. Total ugly cry.

  5. From Meghan:

-Alzheimer’s commercials make me cry ALL THE TIME. Even the ones for the drugs, in which the old people are playing with the children and none of them actually have alzheimer’s. It’s terrible.

-Also, anything involving sad, lost puppies (including books and TV).

    -Happy endings in movies.

-Everything else that I haven’t mentioned.

It’s gotten worse over the years. I cry at everything, so you are not alone. I have found a way to control it, though. If I pretend that I am fake crying and make one big sob, I can somehow choke it back. I’ve no idea how this is physically possible, but it’s saved me from crying in public many a time, and people sometimes even think it’s funny. Score!

Girl, I am with you and I feel your pain.

  6. From san:

I might not cry just thinking about a movie, but I definitely cry when watching movies. A lot.

    Some favorites:
    - The Holiday
    - Titanic
    - Jerry McGuire
    - Reign over me

P.S. I love Disney’s The Fox and the Hound… it’s not one of the very popular Disney tales, but I used to have the book and it was one of my favorites.

    • From Mrs. Priss:

AH, yes! The Holiday!! When Arthur gets up on stage and his song is playing… omg. Hold me.

  7. From JamieS:

I cry at e-v-e-r-y Disney movie. Most of the time it’s sobs. Actually every movie in general. Or close to it. Books, oh do I ever cry at books! Anything involving my kids. Every week at our 3 year old’s dance class, no joke. So to sum it up- everything makes me cry. You are in no way alone!

  8. From Jen:

    Hi, I’m a habitual crier.

I cry during Pampers commercials. Movie previews. When Daysie licks my face and gives me big Chihuahua eyes. When ManFriend looks at me weird.

I feel like a child, but the tears know no age. You’re not the only one!

  9. From Taryn M. Peine:

BIG FISH. Oh it killed me. KILLED ME. I can’t even go near the Disney movies, and I still can’t believe we watched them when we were kids and it was OK. All this death and despair and then I was like, MOM! Can I have a Capri-Sun?

  10. From Mrs. Priss:

Hahahaha, I love this!! I’m such a sensitive sap when it comes to Disney movies too! In Cinderella, when the step sisters rip her gown to shreds… I cry. In Beauty and the Beast when Belle’s father is being tossed around and ridiculed… I cry. lol, it’s a sickness, but I’m right there with you!

  11. From Kristin:

Since becoming a mama, I can’t take when a kiddo is in pain in a movie! Cue me shuddering.

  12. From Victoria:

OMG I cry at the iPhone 4 facetime commercials too!!!! Especially the one where the woman tells the husband that they’re pregnant, the one where the new father is showing his dad his grand baby! OMG I’m starting to cry now!

People getting engaged make me cry happy tears!!! I had snot coming out of my nose when he proposed! Luckily I had some napkins from my hot chocolate with me!

I also cried during Turner & Hooch, Gilmore Girls, when Rory’s grandfather has a heart attack in the 7th season at the END OF THE EPISODE MAKING YOU WATCH THE WHOLE ENTIRE NEXT EPISODE TO MAKE SURE HE IS OKAY!!!!!

Also when people get pregnant and giving birth! At the end of Steel Magnolias when the woman is on her way to the hospital! Flooding! Weddings also make me tear up!

Randall always makes fun of the me when I cry at the littlest things, so you are not alone!

  13. From Mrs. Priss:

Okay, I have one more. Harry and the Henderson’s.

  14. From Nora:

Well, you’re talking to a girl who cried during the biggest loser season teaser last night. NO JOKE. I also cry during Parenthood every single week.

Movies that make me cry, no matter what:
    You’ve Got Mail
    The Holiday
    The Notebook
    Breakfast at Tiffany’s
    A Walk in the Clouds
Most Disney movies, especially the old school ones and ANYTHING, any movie, ever that has been made involving emails will make me cry.
And dance movies! Like Center Stage. And Step Up when a certain someone in that movie takes an unfortunate turn.
Oh, and you can judge me all you want for this but I cried in the last Twilight movie too.
So yeah, i’m right there with you

  15. From mintyfresch:

The Fox and the Hound was one of my favorites and I always always cried! Also, I’m with you on Marley and Me. Definitely cried in the theater. (And during Old Yeller!) Pretty much anything that has something terrible happening to a pet means that I’m going to cry. However, it’s not limited to that. I also cry when favorite human characters die (in books or movies) and especially when it’s someone’s spouse. Anything involving spouses being sadly separated, whether by death or otherwise cues the waterworks for me. There’s no choice, it just happens.

  16. From Meghan:

The Lion King, when Mufasa dies and Simba goes upto him and tries to shake him awake, and again in the end when he see’s the vision of him guiding him along. Ugly cry all the way.

  17. From Randi:

Okay Lauren, why did we only have such a short amount of time together in school b/c I swear, we are TOO similar! I cry ALL-THE-TIME. In fact I just told a co-worker this morning that if I talked about a certain man-friend I would start crying and wouldn’t stop. I cried when my friend came over sobbing b/c her boyfriend broke up with her. I cry at the Hallmark commercial when the little boy takes the old lady the card and comes back and says “I think she was crying”. I can’t watch the scene in SATC the movie (part 1) when Big and Carrie meet in the street after he bails on their wedding b/c my heart LITERALLY hurts. I cry when I’m happy/tired/sad/sick. Tell your hubby that its just a GIRL thing and to back off! Then, can you please call my man friend and tell him the same thing because I’m pretty sure he thinks I’m a freak. Oh and I refused to finish reading Marley and Me b/c I knew how it would end and I couldn’t handle it. My mom still asks me to this day if I’ve finished the book. Um, no.

  18. From Kristine:

    I’m a crier. A BIG crier.

To this day I refuse to watch The Lion King. And I totally hear you on The Fox and the Hound, it was one of my favorites, but MAN did it make me weep.

Another one, The Green Mile. I balled like a baby, and the worst part is it was during a class at school. (But I was not alone)

  19. From RootsAndRings:

I don’t cry that often. I WANT to cry a lot, but I don’t… mostly because I look like death when I cry.

You know that you tube video of the people dancing down the wedding aisle to that Chris Brown song?? When the bride comes in, I cry. Every time. EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Just wait until you have a baby. I’ve cried three times in the past 2 days. That may be a record for me.

  20. From Liz:

HAHAHA oh my goodness your conversation with Michael made me laugh. Not because it’s amusing that you cry at Robin Hood but just because I can imagine that convo actually happening. You are SO cute.

I cry at documentaries. Anything involving little kids with terminal diseases or animal endangerment. I watched The Dover on instant Netflix the other night and bawled my eyes out.

    So, you’re not alone <3

  21. From Lilly-Catherine:

Oh girl, I am so there with you! I cry over commercials all the time, and any movie that has sad moments, at all. Dear John, The Last Song, certain TV Shows, and Disney movies, I even cried during Harry Potter 4. The commercial that always gets me? The one with the dad talking to his daughter before she drives away. I get all sappy… plus the FaceTime commercial with the newborn baby. I need stock in Kleenex.

  22. From Lauryn:

Movies and commercials always get me too! The one scene that comes to mind is in The Family Stone when Judy Garland is singing Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and they show the whole family grieving over the fact that Diane Keaton had cancer. Oy. Now that song always makes me cry.

  23. From Kara:

Disney movies. Any single one of them. I need tissues just trying to think of which movies specifically make me bawl. Fox and the Hound, the Lion King, Lilo and Stitch, Eight Below (I bawled in the theatre, the boyfriend swore to never take me to see another Disney ever again).

The Notebook definitely makes me cry too. And the scene from the Sex and the City movie after Big ditches Carrie at the wedding.

  24. From Kristine:

I forgot A Walk to Remember. I’m pretty sure I balled throughout the entire movie. Not to mention the book, along with all of Nicholas Sparks’ other books. Dear John and The Last Song, Oi Vey.

  25. From Ashlee:

I’m a daddy’s girl so anything that involves a girl’s dad dying or getting sick… Hello, waterworks!
There’s a show on Food Network called Dinner:Impossible… On one episode a couple had to push their wedding up because the bride’s father had cancer and they weren’t sure if he’d make it to their original wedding date. I think I used up an entire box of Kleenex.
I also cried (in the theater) over the movie Taken. Yes, the action movie with Liam Neeson. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.

  26. From Lauren:

In a movie if someone has a baby I cry. I cry if a cartoon animals dies or a friendship is broken up (Fox and the Hound KILLS ME). I get teary eyed if there is a tender moment between parent and child. If we’re watching a movie and a scene like that happens my husband will look over at me to see if I’m crying.

  27. From ashleemae:

OH, and P.S. I Love You? Every time she gets a note I bawl. Don’t get me started on Precious.
Now that I think about it…I basically cry at everything.

  28. From Stefanie:

OMG! Appartently there are alot of us criers. . . all female. Hmm. I think we’re made that way, to be more compassionate and thus inclined to cry. I cry at every happy or sad moment on tv, commercials, movies and books. I cry at church with a baby is dedicated or someone is baptised. I pretty much cry when ANYONE else is crying and especially when men choke up – I loose it. I don’t really mind it though, it’s a good release, even if it is a little embarrasing.

  29. From wifeychronicles:

I always cry when I see the animal cruelty commercials.

And I cry a lot when it’s that time. I’ll just start crying and husband will ask why and then I’ll start crying harder because I don’t even know why I’m crying. Lol he thinks I’m crazy.

  30. From Valerie:

First – I totally get why you cry during Robin Hood – it IS sad! Now, I am the complete opposite because I never cry in real life situations and usually the only time I do cry is during animal movies or after really good books. Examples:
Marley and Me – I had the ugly cry in the theater AND after reading the book
My Dog Skip – this dog is so much like my childhood dog (his name was Skippy FTLOG) that when my family randomly started watching this movie at my grandparents house one Christmas, my entire family – even my dad started to cry at the end. This is really funny because #1 I have only seen my dad cry twice and that was one of the times and #2 my future husband and future SIL were there and were totally weirded out – we still laugh about this years later.
Terms of Endearment – It’s PAST TEN! Enough said.
Beaches – Every. Single. Time. I watch this movie it gets me.
Time Traveler’s Wife – If I know I need to cry and can’t I will read this book. I have also seen the movie and cried – but I think that is only because I am so invested in the characters because of the book.

  31. From Amy --- Just A Titch:

I am convinced we are the same person, because EVERYTHING makes me cry. Movies: Phenomenon, Land Before Time, Little Mermaid (she leaves her DAD!)

Life: um, everything, all the time.

  32. From steph anne:

Haha, I’m usually a private crier when it comes to TV shows or movies that involves dying or losing a family member. I just cried last night during One Tree Hill’s episode. :(

  33. From Sturgmom:

It never fails. Every holiday season I’m listening to the fablous carols on the radio, enjoying some Christmas cheer and BAM! “We Need a Little Christmas” comes on the radio and I start bawling.

J makes fun of me b/c he says it’s the happiest Christmas carol ever written, but he’s never seen Mame (where the carol originated). It’s SAD! The characters are going through a very sad, dark time and they use the excuse of an early Christmas to cheer themselves up. But it’s SAD!

  34. From Sonal:

I’m not a movie/television crier, but any of the Pedigree or Humane Society commercials break my heart. All those abused, neglected, innocent animals… ahhh, it’s making me sad now.

  35. From Kristen:

    Where to even begin?

    1. The Notebook…. huge ugly cry happened
    2. Weddings…. even weddings on tv, where I don’t know the people.
    3. Humane Society commercials
    4. Sick Kids Hospital commercials
    5. Hallmark holiday commercials
    6. Letters from my friend in Holland (I miss her so much)

Girlfriend, you are not alone, we have to stick together on this!!

  36. From Em:

Reading what makes everyone cry is making me tear up! LOL

    Movies that kill me are:
Steel Magnolias – when Sally Fields is reading to Julia Roberts while she is in a coma
The Notebook – when old Allie lapses and Noah just sits on the bed crying while the nurses take her
    Stepmom
Hope Floats – when the little boy is swinging talking to Harry Conick Jr. after the grandmother has passed away
    Dumbo

Other random things make me sad – like seeing elderly people dining alone. I always want to join them and/or give them a big hug.

    • From Katie:

holy crap, just reading the Steel Magnolias description made me cry!

  37. From jackie:

i forgot about P.s I love you. cried and cried. i could barely watch it through my tears. my dad passed 8 years ago, and i think it brought up a bunch of old memories of that grieving time.

  38. From Clara from Portugal:

Ohhhh the Big Fish comment made me tear up just by thinking of it. I don’t think I ever cried more in a movie… maybe I have daddy issues but that movie made a mess out of me.

Then there’s, of course, Steel Magnolias and E.T.

Lately I cried a bit at the ending of “Did You Hear About The Morgans?”… it was so much funnier than I thought it would be and the ending is very sweet.

But if we’re going the silly route, my husband LOVES IT when Monsters Inc. comes on. I can always feel his head tilt to better stare at the girl who sobs like a freakin’ baby at the end, at the mere suggestion of “Boo?” “Kitty!”.

  39. From Amy:

I am exactly like you! I cry during all of those movies too… Oh and A Walk to Remember with Mandi Moore? You just mention that movie and I tear up!

  40. From Ivy:

I’m just like you! I cannot handle anything that has sad animals in it! I also cry during any shows that involve weddings, birth and death. Another thing that I cannot handle are those dang animal cruelty commercials where Sarah MacLaughlin sings. Shoot me now. Those are the worst, plus you can’t avoid them because they just pop up without warning. I can’t even listen to her music anymore because all I can think about are sad, abandoned, sick animals…I’m going to go cry now…

  41. From Will:

Salsa Dog makes me cry … out of joy : )

  42. From Brittney:

LOL oh, same for the Disney animal flicks.

I also can’t watch Honey I Shrunk the Kids. Why? Because as a kid the scene where the ant dies defending the retarded kids from the scorpion? Sent me into HYSTERICS as a seven year old, and I hated those children, HATED them.

  43. From Suburban Sweetheart:

“Armageddon.” “Titanic.” And the end of “Newsies” when the entire city of New York comes marching around the corner, singing, to join the rally. I have goosebumps just thinking about it.

  44. From Natalia:

i’m normally not a crier, but last night i was watching a documentary and there was a little girl whose daddy promised her he would come see her easter rug (it’s a brazilian thing), and then the day of the parade he didn’t show. her grandma went out of her way to make sure he was there and i found myself bawling for that poor little girl who was just so disappointed

  45. From Slamdunk:

Fun topic. I can remember my father, the tough Marine, fighting back tears on any movie that had to do with animals–Where the Red Fern Grows, Old Yeller, etc., were killers. I inherited the same characteristic.

  46. From Kyla Roma:

I think I last watched Fox and Hound when I was seven, and I’m STILL not over it! Anything to do with animals or children does me in, I’m a big crier :)

  47. From Blair@HeirtoBlair:

I just have to say that Robin Hood is my FAVORITE STORY EVAH.

& I can’t wait to see the Russel Crowe version, even though I would have made a MUCH better Maid Marion.

    That’s all.

  48. From AReelLady:

I cry at the big bad manly movies. Behind Enemy Lines, Tears of the Sun, Gran Torino. I’m a huge wimp about those movies!

  49. From David:

    Good Will Hunting

  50. From Sally:

Uhh.. have you ever heard of a little movie called THE LAND BEFORE TIME? OMG that is the saddest movie ever… when his mother dies and then he thinks he sees her but it is really his own shadow – If I keep thinking about it I might just cry right now! You are definitely not alone on this one :)

  51. From Amy:

Up made me bawl during the first 10 minutes. I think I cried at Wall-E. Disney Robin Hood gets me, too, the animals are just so cute and it’s so sad I can’t stand it! PS I Love You made me cry for obvious reasons. I cried the first time I saw Love Actually when Emma Thompson’s character finds out her husband has been cheating on her and she opens the Joni Mitchell CD on Christmas Eve…AHHHHHHHHHH!!! ET makes me cry when he gets sick. I am such a bawler.

  52. From Meghan:

Extreme Makeover : Home Edition also makes me cry.

  53. From Katherine:

This is hilarious! When I was in High School I called Sarah M. crying because I was thinking about the little bunnies in Robin Hood. You can ask her if you dont believe me. And before I even read this I have been meaning to tell you that you need to watch the new season of the biggest loser if you aren’t already. I cried when they finished running a mile, and all their stories melt my heart… I know you have Netflix now but its on Hulu. Anyway, other movies that are sure to turn on the water works for me: Breakfast at Tiffanys, everything you mentioned above, Moulin Rouge and any movie that has to do with animal cruelty, even if its watching a dog getting porcupine needles out of a his face (Homeward Bound)…

  54. From awwkitty:

girl, the secret of nimh gets me every.time. mrs. brisby (a mouse) is a widow, with her sick son, having to move her family before plowing time comes.. omg when she gets that medicine powder for him. or when the whole family’s house is sinking.. gah, i can’t even think about it without getting teary.

also? all dogs go to heaven. i was 10 and my dog died. a few months later that movie came out. just thinking of how she said “charlie” still makes me cry.

my husband no longer makes fun of me, but if we’re watching a movie, i can feel his eyes on me when it gets to a part that could possibly induce tears.

  55. From Sensibly Sassy:

oh my goodness, animal sadness in any way shape of form makes me bawl like a little baby

  56. From Katie:

I am a secret crier. I hold it in when I am watching movies with other people even if I really want to cry(sometimes I can’t hold it in, like when I went to see Marley & Me. I had a horrible headache afterwards from crying so much) But when I am alone, I will cry on many movies that no one else would cry on.

Some of my main ones are..
Breakfast At Tiffany’s – It’s like my favorite movie ever.
Titanic – When the band is playing their last song, and the very ending make me cry so much.
Pearl Harbor – Ben Affleck crying makes me cry and of course because the attack on pearl harbor really happened.
The Family Stone – Christmas and someone dying of cancer and I cry alot.
Land Before Time – The first one when Little Foot’s mother dies. OMG. So many tears.
Lilo & Stitch – Stitch reading the book about the ugly duckling and saying he wants a family.

And I also basically cry on any christmas movie whether out of happiness or it being just so sad for some reason. These include: Christmas With the Kranks, Jack Frost(animated), Jack Frost(with real people), Frosty the Snowman, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and the list goes on and on.

And now I finally stop babbling(I do this all the time and don’t realize til I have typed up the longest blog comment known to man.)
