Happy Birthday, Mom!

Mom & Lauren

Today is my mom’s birthday. She might kill me if I tell you how old she is, but I will say this – she’s older than she looks! I know, she’s a hottie. This picture is from my sister’s wedding last summer.

Yet another “Wordless Wednesday” that won’t be very wordless (I told you I can’t shut up).

Happy Birthday, Mom. As I find myself nearly two years into this new, married chapter of my life (you’re not the boss of me!), I see our relationship changing and transforming. Remember when you didn’t know anything and I knew everything? How quickly you have learned so much! I find that these days, you are the one I turn to time and again when I don’t know what to do, and you always seem to know. Maybe it comes from being married for almost 25 years to the man I am proud to call my dad, maybe it comes from having 4 kids in 8-1/2 years, or maybe you are bionic and really good at keeping secrets. I guess we’ll never know.

I do know this: With every passing event, year, and milestone, I feel the skin of our old roles slowly shedding. The new skin underneath is different, and sometimes I miss the old. But we can’t go back, and even if we could, I don’t think we want to. There is so much to look forward to. I have a good foundation, a wonderful man by my side, and so much knowledge and wisdom from the last 23 years of knowing you, Mom. You have pushed me in ways that no one else could. I haven’t always liked you for it, but I can say today that I am thankful.

I love you, Mom. Happy Birthday.

Thanks Owen. I’m so thankful that our relationship continues to grow… and I’m as glad as you are that I’m no longer “the boss of you”! I wish I could write out my feelings as good as you do, but all I got is… I love you too much, and I always will. I’m blessed to be your mom. I’m looking forward to our time together in November.
